I began my training to teach Yoga at the Yoga for Health Foundation based at Ickwell Bury near Biggleswade in 1995.
The Foundation trained yoga students to teach both general and remedial yoga. It was a registered charity and famous worldwide for the work they did with people who have chronic illness or disabilities to help them improve their health and well-being through yoga and meditation. It was also a place for well people to enjoy the beautiful tranquil setting and recover from the strains of life away from the busy world outside.
In 1980 I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis which was a huge 'wake-up' call for me!
Having spent time working in newspaper advertising and enjoying the hustle and bustle of a busy life I was almost overnight unable to work or function 'normally' in any way. The fear associated with the illness led me to suffer from Agoraphobia which further limited my life experiences and put huge barriers up in every direction.
Going through the normal stages of emotions of grief, loss, fear, sadness, anxiety, stress etc. had a tremendously negative effect on my health and I was later to find out through my yoga training the huge part the mind plays in the physical health of the body.
The only knowledge I had of yoga at this time was attending a few evening classes in my village - and after my diagnosis I went to a 'disabled' yoga class. The real benefit for me at that time was wanting to go to the class so badly that I was able to overcome the agoraphobia enough to let me get there and back! It was during one of these classes that an idea formed in my mind that I would love to train to teach Yoga.
Sadly the Foundation closed at the end of March 2006 and at this time we have no residential centre to share the knowledge that has proved to be so effective for so many people. But we have a new organisation that has maintained the ethos of the Foundation - The Yoga for Health and Education Trust, and although we have only been incorporated for a year we have a long list of supporters who want to see another Yoga centre set up as soon as resources allow.
At the beginning the training was hugely challenging - it involved staying away from home for a number of residential weekends and for me still feeling the effects of agoraphobia, an extremely uncomfortable experience! My interest and growing knowledge of the subject of yoga - how to use the power of the breath to overcome the anxiety attacks and how to release the flow of energy through the body to overcome the tension and blockages was my road to recovery.
After gaining the General Training Scheme qualification I then went on to attain the Remedial Training Certificate.
